Abstract and Keywords

This chapter recognizes changing world demographics and resulting increases in the number of people living into old age. We examine social capital and gender as important influences on the living arrangements and care-giving experiences of older people. We detail the development of social capital over the life course and how this differs for men and women. We review common living arrangements, the influence of culture and context on these experiences, as well as different views of the phenomenon of living in place. Next, we consider care-giving and the different resources available to men and women when they need care. In both cases we emphasize the intersectionality of gender and age, together with other aspects of the individual and the broader context. Finally, we outline directions for future research to address these pressing issues.

Keywords: social capital, convoys of social relations, gender, ageing, living arrangements, care-giving
