Abstract and Keywords

In this brief chapter, Shawn Sides (director of Austin-based ensemble theatre company, Rude Mechs), recounts the experiences of her theater companyas they attempted to “re-enact” The Performance Group’s groundbreaking adaptation of The Bacchae, Dionysus in 69, in 2009. Sides traces the company’s workshop and rehearsal process, their interactions with Richard Schechner (the original production’s director), and describes the avant-garde production’s enthusiastically participatory audiences, many of whom eagerly joined in with the ecstatic ritual. Sides asserts that the production was surprisingly successful and locates Dionysus in 69 in 09’s effectiveness in its evocation of the sacred through ritual aspects.
