Abstract and Keywords

In “An Interview with Carey Perloff,” Classicist Margaret Williamson, who has herself enjoyed a 20-year collaboration as consultant with the playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker, discusses Perloff’s direction of numerous Greek plays in the United States and her own collaborations with Wertenbaker. They begin with a discussion of Perloff’s classical education at Stanford University with Helene Foley and her first production of Pound’s version of Sophocles’ Electra in the 1980s with the Classic Stage Company. They move on to her production of Sophocles’ play in Wertenbaker’s translation with Olympia Dukakis in the lead role at the Getty Theatre, which transferred to the American Conservatory Theater, San Francisco. Their collaboration with Sophocles’ Electra led to work on Euripides’ Hecuba, again with Dukakis in the lead, and Perloff’s profound belief in the value of the collaborative endeavor that it at the heart of theater-making.
