Abstract and Keywords

This chapter analyzes the adaptation of Euripides’ Medea by David Cureses in La frontera (1960), a two-act play which reworks Medea’s myth in the pampas during the Conquest of the Desert, a military campaign conducted in the 1870s to gain new lands for the Argentine state in the south of the Province of Buenos Aires and in Patagonia. For Cureses the history of Argentina revolves around the opposition between civilization and barbarism,manifested in the conflict between Us and Them, or the “Christians” (as they are called in the play) and the Indians. Two worldviews are presented in La frontera: either the conflict is viewed as a clash of two civilizations, which can end only with the victory of one side over the other, or it will be in the end a unified Argentina, without internal frontiers and all its inhabitants coexisting peacefully in one country and one nation.
