Abstract and Keywords

This article provides an overview of R&D systems and technology development in Asia, presenting comparative data and case studies of select countries and identifying challenges for Asian R&D systems. A core observation is that the return on investment in R&D is lower than in traditional industrialized countries. The article examines institutional and other reasons for this lower return and suggests solutions. It contributes to the business systems and varieties of capitalism literatures as well as the literature on national R&D systems and technology development.
