Abstract and Keywords

This chapter focuses on mass flight and displacement caused by political violence occurring in the country of origin—that is, conflict and political or economic crisis. It questions the validity of quantitative and qualitative methods used to explore causality in such complex contexts of mass flux and argues in favour of mixed-methods, multidisciplinary research. After providing an overview of theories of conflict-induced displacement, it considers the different methodological approaches and research methods used by scholars to study the causes of conflict-induced displacement and forced migration. It then discusses practical approaches to crisis- and conflict-induced displacement.

Keywords: mass flight, displacement, political violence, conflict, crisis, mixed-methods, multidisciplinary research, research methods, forced migration
