Abstract and Keywords

This paper considers the impact of the Reformation on the book culture of Europe, as it had developed in the seventy years since the invention of printing. The technical problems of printing with moveable type had been resolved relatively swiftly; the most testing challenge was to develop an infrastructure of distribution and sales. The result was a consolidation into a much smaller number of major centers of production. Luther’s movement created a new market that both subverted and energized this established economic geography. This reorientation of production owed a great deal to Luther’s own incisive, intuitive understanding of the potentialities of the new medium.
