Abstract and Keywords

Because words occur with different frequencies, frequency-based word lists are a valuable resource for teaching and learning. Such lists are used as the basis for designing graded reader series, for developing vocabulary tests for measuring vocabulary size, for calculating text coverage, for setting vocabulary learning goals, for research, for deliberate teaching and learning, and for language curriculum design. As well as high-frequency word lists, specialized word lists have been developed for academic vocabulary, science vocabulary, and technical vocabulary. The development of a word list needs to be guided by the purpose for creating the list, and this has a direct effect on the type of corpus used and the unit of counting.
