The visual in accountability is an important but relatively neglected area. Visual media may be used to obscure accountability, through the impression management associated with visual forms such as financial graphs, pictures, architecture or web pages. These issues are clearly important to the field: in an era when miscommunication and financial scandals have dominated questions of accountability, stakeholders should be alert to the constitutive nature of the visual. However, visual forms may also be put to good use in accountability communication. Financial graphs, when well used, are a highly beneficial way of communicating accounting numbers. Pictures, sketches and diagrams may usefully fill a gap in the communication of intangibles, which has proved elusive to traditional forms of accounting.
