Abstract and Keywords

Sounds may be classified as noises, pitched sounds, or tones. For the purposes of this article, music is defined as the art of combining tones into melodic (sequential), harmonic (simultaneous), and rhythmic (temporally organized) patterns. Music as tone art generates four perceptual quality spaces: loudness (heard sound intensity), rhythm (patterns of temporal note values), timbre (tone colour), and pitch (heard frequency). Two competing models of pitch space are compared. The extent to which music both exploits and subverts auditory scene analysis, the principal evolutionary proper function of audition, is discussed. The article concludes by considering what objects, if any, are heard in music and proposes that tokens of musical types (melodies, harmonies, and rhythmic patterns) present themselves as successive appearances of virtual individuals in virtual musical space.
