Abstract and Keywords

This article begins by recounting the history of the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT). It then considers the immediate global environment in 1995 and the actual proceedings of the Non Proliferation Treaty Review and Extension Conference (NPTREC). The proceedings of the conference are discussed to identify the ingredients of success. The article concludes with a reference to the most recent Non Proliferation Treaty Review Conference and an assessment of the future of the NPT to evaluate the historical value of the NPTREC. It addresses the following question: How permanent is the indefinite extension of the NPT that was achieved in 1995?
