Abstract and Keywords

With a focus on the US reaction to the Arab uprisings, this chapter shows how international relations scholarship and US policy in the Middle East privilege US-dominated forms of global order, ignore their hierarchical power relations, and fail fully to recognize the agency of Middle East states and societies as actors in the international system even in the wake of transformations likely to promote democratic change. The chapter concludes by briefly outlining the emerging forces attempting to redefine regional politics through the realization of new sources and forms of postcolonial agency.
