Abstract and Keywords
This article explores the importance of language change in the individual in grammaticalisation research. It provides a general discussion of the linguistic behaviour of individuals under change in progress, from both the cross-sectional and the longitudinal angles. It offers a detailed case study of three auxiliaries in the language of three English gentlemen around the turn of the seventeenth century. The analysis reveals a great deal of variation between individuals in terms of their participation in ongoing linguistic changes.
