Abstract and Keywords

This chapter contains an overview of the development of word meaning research up to and including the era of structuralist semantics: after a brief introduction to the pre-nineteenth-century traditions, the chapter has a closer look at historical–philological semantics, and at structuralist semantics. Within the latter, the chapter distinguishes between three main approaches: lexical field theory, componential analysis, and relational semantics.

Keywords: word meaning, semantic change, structuralism, lexical field, componential analysis, lexical relations
