We would like to thank the contributors to this handbook for their work and their efforts to ensure that we could hit our deadlines. It might seem foolhardy even to attempt to get thirty-two contributors to submit work by a specific deadline but the majority did so. This handbook could not have been published without the help and support of three consultant editors, Dr Robert Ellison, Dr John Morgan-Guy and Dr Bob Tennant. Robert Ellison acted as final arbiter in matters of citations and saved us from the inconsistencies of the Harvard style of which humanities scholars remain wary. John Morgan-Guy and Bob Tennant were able to attend a working editorial conference in Oxford in March 2011 which turned into a symposium and from which emerged much of the final shape of the volume and the introductory and concluding essays. Their collective wisdom lies behind much of this volume.

William Gibson is grateful for the award of a visiting fellowship at the Armstrong Browning Library at Baylor University in Texas in 2009 and a visiting fellowship at the Lewis Walpole Library at Yale University in 2011; both considerably aided his research on sermons. Keith Francis is grateful for the award of a visiting fellowship at Oxford Brookes University and the help he received at the British and Bodleian Libraries.

Finally, our thanks to copy editor Tom Chandler, and to Tom Perridge, Elizabeth Robottom, and their colleagues at Oxford University Press who have been exemplary publishers, supportive, encouraging, and stimulating.
