Abstract and Keywords

This article examines village sermons to gain insights into the mind-set and the practice of the nineteenth-century preacher in his parish setting. It addresses the following questions: What was it about publishing sermons addressed to villagers that he found so compelling, and how did he visualize his village? What did he expect of the villagers, and how did he approach them? How were village sermons typically constructed? How did preachers use the Bible, and what reference did they make to Christian themes and the seasons of the Church’s year? The study is based on a sample of 150 volumes of villages sermons located in the British Library catalogue that were published between 1804 and 1906.
