Abstract and Keywords

This article examines sermons preached during the transition of English charity-schools from thinly-scattered, ad hoc local provision into a national system. It first considers a sample case of sermon exegesis and then explores sermons’ roles in three contrasting loci: the Gravel Lane Dissenting charity-school; the annual assemblies of the Cities of London and Westminster charity-schools; and local fund-raising for the Incorporated National Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church.

Keywords: sermons, English charity schools, London charity-schools, Westminster charity-schools
