Abstract and Keywords

The first half of the nineteenth century in Ireland was marked by sectarian controversy, involving the long-term dispute between Protestantism and Catholicism. The sermon became the weapon used by opposing sides to express their views. This article explores the role of the sermon in political controversy. Specifically, it considers how religion became a part of the political debate and its role in the growth of sectarianism and political polarization.
