Abstract and Keywords
This article explores the social aspects of two technologies which alter appearance. The first is breast implants, the second ‘living skin’. It discusses the social shaping of the technology, the ways in which risks associated with them are constructed as technical issues, the socio-political implications of the technologies, and finally the ethical issues. In so doing, the goal is to highlight how embodied experiences of appearance and appearance alteration are constituted at the interface of complex socioeconomic relations.
