This article reviews the current status of healthcare provision in the US with regards to reconstructive surgery affecting physical appearance and suggests future directions for outcomes research and patient advocacy. It discusses surgery for children born with congenital anomalies, breast surgery, body contouring surgery, and the provision of psychosocial services in the United States.
