Abstract and Keywords

This article highlights the need to raise awareness in healthcare professionals about how to optimize psychosocial outcomes in people living with disfigurement. The article describes personal experience of the advantages of multidisciplinary care both for patients in hospital and for those attending outpatient clinics, and in raising the awareness of team members about psychosocial issues. To underline this point, the article includes extracts of an interview with Katie Piper, a former model and presenter. Katie was the subject of a revenge attack in March 2008, when a man, at the behest of her violent ex-boyfriend, threw sulphuric acid into her face. The article highlights Katie's conviction, in the aftermath of treatment for burns caused by an acid attack, of the need for comprehensive rehabilitation including psychological support. It alludes to the challenges of convincing health service managers of the wisdom of including psychological care in core services and discusses the role care providers (including psychologists) can and should have in positioning psychological services and in commissioning care.

Keywords: healthcare professions, disfigurement, multidisciplinary care, acid attack, psychological care
