Abstract and Keywords
This article considers appearance through the lens of culture and ethnicity, with a focus on how different physical attributes are considered desirable in different parts of the world. Drawing on one of the few studies in this area — a qualitative study of a South Asian community's views of visible difference — the article demonstrates how religious and cultural beliefs relating to appearance can influence attitudes, affect social lives, and influence expectations of marriage, particularly amongst women.
