Abstract and Keywords

This chapter reviews integrated approaches to wetland-oriented archaeology that are under way in some regions. It shows that investigating the association between hunter-gatherers and wetland settings allows us to (a) expand our knowledge of the human past; (b) evaluate the adequacy of archaeological sampling strategies; and (c) evaluate various interpretations of this relationship, as well as our understanding of hunter-gatherer lifeways. This in turn helps shift our attention from ‘things’ to ‘people’, thus promoting a more anthropological archaeology.

Keywords: archaeological research, anthropological research, wetlands, hunter-gatherers
