Abstract and Keywords

ELAN is a generic multimedia annotation tool for multimodality research. It has a tier-based data model in which a tier serves as a container for annotations. Tiers can be part of a tier hierarchy, and a set of predefined constraint types is present to express inter-tier relations. Its media playback solution offers support for many popular file formats and facilitates annotation of multiple camera recordings. A powerful search engine is included, which fully exploits the intra- and inter-tier structural and temporal relations. The tool is well suited to both qualitative and quantitative research. ELAN is available for the major operating systems and can be downloaded free of charge.
