Abstract and Keywords

This article reviews the emerging literature on public food regulation by developing a general conceptual framework of the political economy of public food standards. It explains key insights from the literature and indicates how specific applications of the framework have yielded additional conclusions. It provides an overview of different interest groups who may have varying interests in public food standards. It then discusses the political equilibrium of this model and some factors that may influence this equilibrium. It presents the relation between this political equilibrium and development, and the impact of perceptions and media. It then discusses how various types of food standards can be incorporated in this general framework, and whether food safety standards are different from other types of standards. It analyzes the relation between trade and the political economy of public standards and presents a discussion on the relation between public and private food standards at the end.
