Thomism acquired the status of the Church’s official philosophy as a result of Vatican I, Aeterni Patris, and the modernist crisis. Much excellent metaphysics was written; even the XXIV Theses are less bad than are commonly believed. Thomists wrote sound defences of realism against idealism. The study of Aquinas ranged from the metaphysical to the historical to the aesthetic. There were naturally many different interpretations of Thomism. A grave problem with the imposition of Thomism as official philosophy was that the officials confused their interpretation with Thomism itself. Thomists got involved in politics, some as authoritarians and others as liberals. The Thomist debate about Christian philosophy decided whether it would survive in the universities.
