Abstract and Keywords

This article examines the polemical literature of the mid-seventeenth century. It looks at how medical and scientific concerns emerged in the literature of the mid-seventeenth century and the strategies by which modern literary scholarship seeks to understand them. The analysis focuses on Paradise Lost but it also considers the writing of Andrew Marvell, Thomas Browne, Thomas Hobbes, and Abraham Cowley.
