Abstract and Keywords

This article provides an overview of the approach of human development that has characterized much of UN development thinking since the early 1990s. This approach also helps emphasize the importance of numerous institutions in the UN development system that are not treated separately in this book. The article concentrates on the conceptual approach that has been repeatedly refined with the annual publication of UNDP — the Human Development Report — beginning in 1990. It also views the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a possible bridge between the UN system and the Bretton Woods institutions.
