Abstract and Keywords

This chapter looks at how William Shakespeare was used during the Great War. It shows that those who directly or indirectly experienced war used to Shakespeare to orientate themselves and to try to understand how the Great War was affecting them and their world. The chapter emphasizes that Shakespeare and tradition are important parts of the Great War experience, as well as being important to understanding the mental landscape of the Great War and the art which makes up part of that landscape.
