Abstract and Keywords

This chapter explains how the differences between ‘imagination’ and ‘sense’ become blurred in the most powerful First World War verses, and determines how the experiences in the trenches were translated into poetic form, identifying the dangers and pleasures of such a process. It also studies some of the issues with regards to the senses by considering the works of two solider-poets, namely Isaac Rosenberg and Wilfred Owen. The chapter furthermore looks at the concept of ‘sensuous frontline existence’ and how it changed into a complex relation between language, perception, and emotion in Owen and Rosenberg's works.
