Abstract and Keywords

This chapter studies Rudyard Kipling and his war poetry, first considering Kipling's origins as a writer. Next, it tries to provide an understanding of Kipling's attitude to war, outlining the changes and continuities in the way he wrote about it, and finally discusses George Saintsbury's assumption that Kipling's career as a writer was instrumental, and that he was occupied with a literary form of nation building.
