Abstract and Keywords
Many age-related decrements taken to be biologically determined may, in fact, be a function of the negative mindsets we mindlessly hold about old age. Furthermore, the social and physical world may be flawed in its construction and its assumption that the people who struggle to adapt within it are the “problem,” rather than considering how changes that continue throughout the lifespan could be better accommodated. In this chapter, it is argued that age-related decrements are amenable to change. Research results demonstrating the power of mindfulness include, among other things, enhanced vision, hearing, cognitive performance, and longevity and provide an argument against the inevitability of many performance decreases that are typically expected and observed in the later stages of life. The chapter concludes with implications and practical applications of the theory and research described.
