Abstract and Keywords

Paul Malinowski is a German cognitive psychologist, Buddhist, and meditation researcher. Here he notes parallels between psychological and Buddhist approaches to flourishing. Both aim to reduce unhelpful experiences and increase helpful ones for example. He notes the variety of meditative practices and discusses mechanisms for their effectiveness in ameliorating psychological distress and promoting psychological health that involve an increase in positive emotion and enhanced positive resources. He also discusses the way in which meditative practice enhances well-being through greater mental, emotional, and attentional balance and warns against jumping to premature conclusions on the basis of cross-sectional studies.
