Abstract and Keywords

Kiran Kumar K. Salagame, a Psychology Professor from Mysore University, outlines a Hindu perspective on the development of well-being. This takes into account the spiritual dimension of human nature, known as shreyas and is contrasted with a conceptualization of well-being in terms of materiality, known as preyas. He notes that the Hindu perspective does not make any qualitative distinction in the experienced nature of happiness, as contemporary researchers often do with respect to hedonia and eudaimonia. The chapter outlines how, according to the Hindu perspective, the goals of human life—purusharthas, the personality predispositions—gunas, and self-sense (experienced at five dimensions of personality) panchakosha, play a vital role in well-being. Hinduism asserts that there is scope for transformation towards states of well-being that are not contingent on external circumstances. In general, the Hindu way of life is directed towards the development of intrinsic well-being through the cultivation of certain attitudes, habits, and values that help the process of transformation.
