Abstract and Keywords

This article aims to characterize modernist novels in Europe. It discusses the forms of several modernist novels including Ulysses, Mrs. Dalloway, and Absalom, Absalom!, and suggests that the modernist novel in Europe can be considered as a sort of secret agent of literature. The article contends that the great difference between the modernism of European novels and that of their Anglo-American counterparts has to do with realism.

Keywords: modernist novels, Europe, Ulysses, Mrs. Dalloway, Absalom, Absalom!, literature, realism
