Learning from the praxis of theater for development and other community development programs in Asia, this chapter argues for the promotion of an applied ethnomusicology that is participatory and which incorporates action research methodologies that engage communities to make changes in their lives. In order for any cultural development program to be sustainable, there is a need to democratize research and to promote collaboration between the researcher and the community in the planning, training, research, mapping of issues, analysis, and presentation, so that the community is engaged and empowered in the entire process for change and is enabled to take ownership of the project.
