Abstract and Keywords

Researchers have been investigating leader–member exchange (LMX) and justice variables jointly for almost two decades, although there is still no definitive agreement on the nature or form of their relationship. This chapter reviews the LMX–justice literature, categorizing the research into several main approaches: LMX as antecedent to justice, LMX differentiation as antecedent to justice, justice as moderating the relationship between LMX and outcomes, justice as antecedent to LMX, and LMX as moderating the relationship between justice and outcomes. A model is proposed that reconciles some of these multiple perspectives by incorporating event-based, entity-based, and anticipatory justice perceptions with both LMX and supervisor LMX. The chapter ends with a discussion of future directions for LMX–justice research.

Keywords: leader–member exchange (LMX), organizational justice, distributive justice, procedural justice, fairness
