Abstract and Keywords

Ethnographically informed, the chapter investigates opportunities for transgression of culturally available discourses of gender through visual and textual coding of masculinity, facilitated by Web 2.0. Underpinned by an understanding that “doing music” always incorporates a significant degree of “doing gender,” it examines enmeshment of online and offline music spaces and practices. The chapter offers a definition of virtual music as well as an overview of the key “milestones” in the debates about gender, body, and virtual environments, before focusing on MySpace as a site where gender politics of digital media can be observed and debated. It acknowledges the impact of media convergence manifested in permeability between online and offline music “spaces,” and through the shifting of music and gender practices and audience positions. The notions of “bandhood,” ‘homosocial space,” and “hegemonic masculinity” are discussed through images and embodiments of bandhood, such as band photographs and music videos.
