The initial idea for this Handbook originated from David Musson, of Oxford University Press, who suggested to Paul and Stephen that they should develop a proposal. It soon became apparent, given the scope of the work, that more than the usual range of expertise would be required for the project, and so the original pair were delighted to invite Pam and Rose to join them on the editorial team. The editorial work that ensued was less onerous than might be imagined. A sequence of trans-Atlantic conference calls made the periodic editorial meetings both possible and effective, despite the distance separating the participants.

In addition, several individuals must be acknowledged for their support and help in bringing the project to a successful conclusion—especially in the later stages of the process. The contributions of Cornell staff members Judy Mead and Krista Knout to the project have been invaluable. At Oxford University Press, in addition to David Musson, we benefited regularly from the support of Matthew Derbyshire, Stuart Fowkes, Franseca Gwalchmai, and Tanya Dean. Finally, we offer thanks to our incomparable copyeditor, Lynn Deanne Childress, who, as well as being eagle-eyed and very efficient, dispensed philosophical insights and good advice all along the way.
