(p. vi) Acknowledgments

As editors, we first and foremost must acknowledge our contributors. Completing a volume comprised of more than thirty chapters, all written by separate authors, requires collaboration and cooperation. We could not have asked for more of either. Of course we are even more grateful for each of their efforts to remain within the word limits we imposed, without sacrificing any quality.

We also thank our British friends at Oxford University Press. Christopher Wheeler, the publisher at OUP, convinced us we could pull this Handbook together, and we would enjoy the experience. He was right on both counts. Along the way, we received invaluable assistance from Natasha Knight, Jenny Townshend, and Rachel Platt. It took all three to keep track of and post and repost on our very own website our multiple drafts, especially the multiple final drafts. We are not exactly sure what job description accompanies Matthew Cotton's title of Assistant Commissioning Editor. We are sure that no one did more to shepherd the manuscript through to completion, and never once did he lose patience with us. Emma Barber continually allowed us to include revisions long after the schedule allowed, as should a helpful production editor. As for Virginia Williams, our copy editor, we doubt she ever sleeps. We know she does not take off weekends.

Finally we must express our deepest appreciation to our families. This volume took some half-dozen years to complete. They lived with it throughout, including those times when we probably spent more time with the manuscripts, and each other, than we did with them. So thank you Marion, Morgan, Tyler, and at least for the end game, Fred and Anna; and Drew, Kai, Elena, and Noah.
