Abstract and Keywords
This article deals with the anatomy of cochlear supporting cell types, their molecular specializations, and their functional or physiological roles during normal hearing and during damage or overstimulation. It begins with explaining the cellular organization of the cochlea, focusing on the supporting cell types in the mature organ of corti. It also describes the functional roles of the supporting cells, which include, homeostasis in the cochlea, providing structural support, and few functions depending on the molecular specialization of supporting cells. Furthermore, it also details the functions of cochlear supporting cells during development, damage, repair, and regeneration. Finally, it gives a brief description on what lies in the future of cochlear supporting cells. It states that research into the function of supporting cells in the normal, damaged, and ageing ear will provide better understanding of cochlear physiology alleviate cochlear pathophysiology.
