Abstract and Keywords
This article examines reading communities in England during the medieval period. It suggests that medieval reading always a community activity and proves this claim by drawing on some of the vast range of evidence of reading cultures in medieval England. It discusses the relation between literacy and the provision of reading material and describes some current development in research on medieval reading.
