Abstract and Keywords

This article addresses elegy in photography. André Bazin notes that, in photography, ‘for the first time an image of the world is formed automatically, without the creative intervention of man’ and that ‘all the arts are based on the presence of man, only photography derives an advantage from his absence’. Jahan Ramazani's treatment of elegy in modern poetry is rightly seen as the most important that recent scholarship has produced. Lady Elizabeth Eastlake concerns the artistic status of photography. Alexander Gardner takes advantage of recent technical developments in the medium to produce an image of extraordinary detail. Oliver Wendell Holmes turns to the photograph not of an object in motion, but of a still object, a photograph of the home he grew up in as a child. Dr Leonore Sweet is one individual particularly active in spirit photography.
