Editing a project of this scale incurs many debts. The conversations with friends and colleagues that have shaped the Handbook's contours are too many to acknowledge individually. However, several people stand out for their singularly important contributions. Robert Goodin is the mastermind behind the Oxford Handbooks of Political Science, and it is he whom we must thank for bringing us together as the editors of this volume. He has been a wonderful source of intellectual and editorial advice, and the path he started us upon has been immensely rewarding. A project such as this could not have been realized in its present form were it not for assistance provided by Lynn Savery and Mary‐Louise Hickey. Lynn shouldered the early administrative burden, and her work was invaluable in getting the project off the ground. It was Mary‐Louise, however, who shouldered the Herculean task of subsequent organization and editing. It is no exaggeration to say that without her efforts the Handbook would be a pale shadow of this final version. Finally, our contributors deserve special thanks. The brief we gave them was challenging, and in most cases we asked them for multiple iterations of their chapters. They rose to the task with good humor and energy, and the quality of their contributions is impressive and gratifying.
