This article details Donne’s fascinating family background, noting that there was a very strong history of opposition to Tudor religious reform, which he could look back upon going back three generations. The article points out that we should connect Donne’s birth and early life, as well as his subsequent life and writings, to his family’s religious persecution, imprisonment, exile, and death.
