The authors thank Christopher Wheeler for inviting them to co-edit this volume. A particular debt is owed to the Moore Institute, at National University of Ireland, Galway, where the first conference leading to the preparation of this volume was convened, and to the Higher Education Authority, through its PRTLI instrument, The Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Mellon Foundation, who have sustained the efforts of the Moore Institute to promote research in Atlantic History. The second preparatory conference was held in Baltimore, and for this we are indebted to the National Endowment for the Humanities, and Johns Hopkins University, especially its History Department and then chair Gabrielle M. Spiegel, for providing the necessary financial support. Marie Kennedy of the Moore Institute has done sterling work in keeping the volume on track. We also thank Jackie Pritchard, our copy editor; Mike O'Malley, map designer; and Seumas Spark, indexer. It has been a pleasure dealing with our contributors, who have been generous with their time and inordinately patient. Sadly one of our number, John Russell-Wood, died in August 2010 and will be missed by all who knew him. His helpful contributions along the way and his masterful essay will keep his memory alive.
