A list of primary material consulted appears after each essay. Secondary material for all essays is listed in one large bibliography at the back of the volume. To save space, we have used an author—date system.

Titles of works have been modernized within the text of essays, in order to ensure that the same text is presented in the same orthographic form across the volume. However, to enable readers to locate the works consulted more easily (especially if using electronic texts), we retained old spelling in the lists of primary texts (and also in the captions to the illustrations).

The spelling of proper names follows The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography in the first instance; for people omitted from ODNB (e.g. some printers), we have followed the English Short-Title Catalogue.

In quotations from primary material in old spelling, u/v and i/j have been standardized. Interpolations, including ellipses, have been given in square brackets.
