Abstract and Keywords

This chapter discusses bodily experience and its disorders, showing that bodily psychopathology is pervasive and that the different terms can be reduced to a number of general phenomenological principles. It first looks at some examples of bodily psychopathology in terms of body size, shape, color, composition, integrity, function, belongingness, etc., before analyzing the incidence of bodily psychopathology in psychiatric and neurological disorders such as schizophrenia, depressive psychosis, mania, epilepsy, and brain damage. It then examines descriptive bodily psychopathology, nosological specificity of bodily psychopathology, and psychological and neuropsychological accounts of bodily psychopathology. It also considers extant phenomenological analysis of bodily psychopathology by focusing on the insights of K. Goldstein, W. Blankenburg, and T. Fuchs. Finally, it describes the philosophical phenomenology of bodily psychopathology.
