Abstract and Keywords
During treatment sessions, clients engage in a range of clinically relevant behaviours, including therapy-interfering behaviours and secondary targets. Utilizing the term “in-session clinical behaviour” (ICB) to encompass any client behaviour that occurs during a session and adversely impacts either the treatment or another part of the client’s life, this chapter focuses on applying DBT principles and strategies to these behaviours in an array of treatment contexts. It reviews principles of behavioural definition for ICBs and discusses how to engage clients in the treatment of these behaviours. It then describes behavioural conceptualizations of the proximal factors leading to and maintaining ICBs, and attends to time and other contextual constraints that may preclude a detailed behavioural chain analysis. Finally, it describes the solution implementation of cognitive-behavioural change procedures to treat ICBs, ranging from brief, single solution interventions to comprehensive solution analyses.
Keywords: In-session clinical behaviour, therapy-interfering behaviour, behavioural definition, behavioural conceptualization, solution implementation
