Abstract and Keywords
Emerging economies have hosted sports mega-events with increased frequency. This chapter provides possible motivations for this development, and assesses the extent to which the expected outcomes from hosting have been realized. Outcomes have often fallen short of expectations by a considerable amount, and probable reasons for that shortfall are identified and analyzed. Methods of ensuring that outcomes from hosting more closely align with expectations are discussed, and conclusions are drawn about the wisdom of emerging economies hosting sports mega-events.
